By mowing more often we are encouraging the lawn to grow sideways, providing thicker coverage. It also helps us stick to the 1/3 rule - never take off more than 1/3 of the leaf in a mow!

Fertilisation

Fertilising your lawn during the growing season will help push leaf growth and give a deep green colour.  This is courtesy of the nitrogen in fertiliser. They also contain potassium and phoshorus which help create stronger roots, helping your lawn cope with long hot spells during summer and any winter frosts. As a general rule, for warm season grasses, we like to use a fertiliser that is higher in nitrogen during the growing months and one that is high in potassium and phosphorus in the colder months.​

Soil Enhancements (eg. Seaweed/Kelp, Soil Wetters)

Soil enhancements feed your soil. They help stimulate microbial activity in the root zone, improving the plants ability to create stronger, healthier roots. The use of a soil wetter will significantly improve water efficiency in your lawn by allowing water to infiltrate the soil better. Soils can often become hydrophobic over time. You can tell if this is the case by water pooling on the surface or most of it running off before soaking in.

Lawn Renovation

A lawn renovation can be done during the growing season and generally includes the following:

​

• Scalping the lawn - cutting the lawn right back, with some grass types this can almost be to the ground.

• Scarifying/dethatching - using a mower with vertical cutting blades removes excess thatch or dead material that is sitting below the green canopy. This allows more nutrients to reach the soil where it is most needed. This will also cut excessively long "runners" in the lawn. 

• Core aeration - removing 'cores' of soil to alleviate compaction, allowing more water, nutrients and oxygen to get down further into the soil. 

• ​Top dressing and levelling - a layer of top dressing soil or turf sand to create an even surface.

​Soil Testing

A soil test can diagnose what essential ingredients are lacking in the soil to provide optimum growth. After a soil test is completed any areas of deficiency can be targeted.
